Measuring a Doorway for Delivery
Measure the clear opening - door removed, trim to trim - not the door slab, and check every doorway and turn on the path to the final room, not just the front door. The narrowest point on the route decides, not the widest.
Measure the opening, not the door
A door slab is usually narrower than the frame it swings from once hinges and stops are accounted for. The number that matters is the clear width between the door stops with the door itself open flat against the wall or removed entirely - most interior doorways clear about 30 to 32 inches this way, though older houses and closet-style doors can run narrower.
Check the whole path, not just the entrance
A front door wide enough for a sofa is not the same as a route to the living room. Hallway turns, a staircase landing, and interior doors along the way are frequently narrower than the entrance, and a piece that clears the front door can still stop dead at a bedroom-width interior door two turns later. Walk the actual path with a tape measure before assuming the entrance is the constraint.
Compare against the piece's width, not its reclined footprint
Delivery happens with the piece folded, so the number to check against a doorway is published width, not the reclined depth used elsewhere in the sizing pages for placing the piece in the room. The two questions are unrelated: a chair can clear every doorway on the route and still need more room than expected once it is reclining against a wall.
When square-on will not work
A piece within an inch or two of the doorway width can sometimes still pass on an angle - tilted through the opening rather than carried square. That is a judgement call for whoever is carrying it, not a guarantee, and it depends on the piece's height and shape as much as its width. Where a doorway check on this site returns anything other than a comfortable margin, treat it as "measure in person before ordering" rather than "will not fit."
Questions
What is the standard interior doorway width?
Commonly around 30 to 32 inches of clear opening, though it varies by house age and door type - always measure the specific doorway rather than assuming.
Should I measure the door or the frame?
Neither on its own - measure the clear opening between the door stops, with the door open flat or removed.
Does a recliner deliver folded or reclined?
Folded. Its published width, not its reclined depth, is what a doorway check should be measured against.
What if the piece is an inch too wide for the doorway?
It may still pass carried on an angle, depending on its height and shape. That is a judgement call on the day, not something a published width alone settles.
