Wall Gap and Wall-Hugger Mechanisms

A recliner's footrest and back swing backward as it opens, which needs space a folded chair does not show. A wall-hugger mechanism slides the seat forward as it reclines, shrinking the gap needed behind it - it does not shrink the reclined depth itself.

Why a folded chair lies about its space

Measure a recliner folded and it looks like any other armchair. The moment it reclines, the footrest extends forward and the backrest tilts back, and on a standard mechanism the whole seat pivots on a fixed point - which means the back of the chair swings away from the wall behind it. A chair that was flush to the wall folded can end up several inches off it reclined, or worse, unable to recline fully because the wall stops the backrest first.

What a wall-hugger actually does

A wall-hugger mechanism moves the whole seat forward on rollers or a linkage as it reclines, rather than pivoting on a fixed rear point. The backrest still tilts back by the same angle, but because the seat has moved forward to meet it, the back of the chair stays close to the wall throughout the motion. The gap needed behind the chair shrinks - often to a few inches rather than a foot or more.

What it does not do

It does not change how far forward the footrest reaches, and it does not reduce the chair's reclined depth - the distance from the wall to the front of the extended footrest is the same regardless of the mechanism. A wall-hugger buys back the gap behind the chair, not the room the fully reclined shape takes up in front of it. The two figures are added separately in the sizing arithmetic on this site for exactly that reason.

Reading a listing for this

Not every recliner states its wall gap directly - it is sometimes buried in an assembly diagram rather than the bullet points. Where a listing does not state it, treat the gap as unknown rather than assuming zero: a mechanism with no wall-hugger feature typically needs six inches to a foot of clearance behind it to open fully. Every piece in this range that has published a figure is listed on the sizing pages, with the wall gap shown separately from the reclined depth it is added to.

Questions

What is a wall-hugger recliner?

A recliner whose seat slides forward as it opens, so the back of the chair stays close to the wall through the recline rather than swinging away from it.

Does a wall-hugger mean the chair can sit flush against a wall?

Closer to flush than a standard mechanism, but usually still a small gap rather than zero. Check the specific mechanism's stated gap rather than assuming none is needed.

Does a wall-hugger reduce how far the footrest extends?

No. Reclined depth - the distance the footrest reaches from the wall - is the same; only the gap behind the chair changes.

How is wall gap different from reclined depth in the arithmetic on this site?

They are two separate published or estimated figures, added together as “clearance from wall” on the sizing pages - neither number alone tells you what the piece needs.
